"Becoming an Official Supporter of Pet Refuge is the most rewarding and important thing we have done since getting into business."

At Pets In The City, giving back to the community is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that our role extends beyond providing top-tier care for dogs—we are committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of animals and their families. Supporting important causes like Pet Refuge allows us to contribute to a greater purpose, helping to protect vulnerable pets and provide safe, nurturing environments for those in need.

It's our way of ensuring that we serve our clients and strengthen the wider community that supports us.

Escaping domestic violence is hard. Escaping with a pet is even harder.

Breaking the Cycle of Violence: Protecting Pets and Families

HOW PETS BECOME SILENT VICTIMS IN DOMESTIC ABUSE

The Issue

Pets often become overlooked victims in cases of domestic violence. Abusers may harm, threaten, or even kill pets as a form of control over their family members, creating emotional and psychological trauma—especially for children who witness the abuse. For many, fear for their pets' safety becomes a reason to delay leaving an abusive situation, as most shelters do not allow pets.

Pet Refuge provides a vital solution by offering a safe, temporary home for these beloved pets, removing a significant barrier for those seeking refuge, with the ultimate goal of reuniting them with their families.

The Facts

New Zealand holds the highest reported rate of family violence among OECD countries, alongside one of the highest rates of pet ownership worldwide. Research shows a strong link between family violence and pet abuse. According to a 2018 Women’s Refuge study:

  • 22% of children witnessed pet abuse
  • 23% had a pet killed by their partner
  • 53% delayed leaving due to fear for their pets’ safety
  • 73% said access to temporary pet accommodation would have made leaving easier
